BANYAN SYSTEMS CHARTS IBM CONNECTIVITY STRATEGY
WITH VINES-TO-SNA LINK
SAN JOSE, Calif., Oct. 7, 1991 -- Banyan Systems today unveiled its
long-term strategy to provide comprehensive IBMR Systems Network
Architecture (SNA) connectivity to users in enterprise-wide BanyanR
VINESR environments. At the InterOp '91 trade show here, Banyan
made two SNA-related announcements:
* A strategic partnership with DCA to extend Banyan's current
range of SNA products with a complementary set of jointly
developed SNA offerings integrating Banyan and DCA
technologies. (See separate press release issued today:
BANYAN AND DCA ANNOUNCE STRATEGIC TECHNOLOGY RELATIONSHIP.)
* A new VINES Server-to-Server SNA (SS/SNA) Option, which
seamlessly connects VINES networks in a true SNA,
peer-to-peer, wide-area network, and which builds upon
Banyan's expertise in providing the industry's widest range
of fully-integrated, wide area server-to-server products.
"SNA is an established corporate standard, and many companies have
a long standing investment in their SNA networks," said Bill
Johnson, Banyan Vice President, Product Marketing. "Our
cost-effective new VINES SS/SNA Option enables these companies to
make the most of their investment by fully integrating the vast
resources of their existing SNA networks with the superior -- and
proven -- network services of VINES networks."
VINES Server-to-Server SNA Option
The VINES SS/SNA Option enables corporate users to implement VINES
server-to-server connectivity over their SNA network, and also to
link geographically dispersed, enterprise-wide VINES networks with
each other via the SNA network.

Installing this option creates a powerful networking environment
which gives users access to all VINES services, including file,
print, mail, and network management, regardless of the users'
locations on the network. This leverages the existing customer
investment in SNA wide area networking while providing the
flexibility to increase the number of connected paths and nodes
easily at minimal cost.
As is true with any VINES network, the actual physical topology of
the network is totally transparent to users, who simply see an
integrated VINES environment of services and host computing
resources.
By allowing VINES networks to be connected through SNA networks,
the VINES SS/SNA Option also eliminates the need for parallel
VINES-to-VINES and VINES-to-SNA links, saving both line and
administrative costs.
How the VINES SS/SNA Option Works
Banyan's VINES SS/SNA Option routes VINES traffic through IBM
front-end processors (FEPs) on the SNA network and makes all VINES
network services and data accessible networkwide without the need
for host-based application software.
The option is configured as a single flexible gateway which
supports both SDLC and Token Ring connections to the SNA front end
processor. Routing across the SNA Network is facilitated by high
throughput and parallel session support via PU2.1 and LU6.2
protocols.
Security is maintained by a combination of the StreetTalkTM Global
Directory Service and the VINES Security Service, which restrict
unauthorized access to the VINES services across the wide area
network.
To enhance the user's ability to monitor and manage the network,
the VINES SS/SNA Option incorporates extensive traffic logging and
tracing facilities with inherent diagnostic and support
capabilities.

Pricing and Availability
The VINES SS/SNA Option has a suggested U.S. list price of $4,495,
and will be available in Nov., 1991. Supported on VINES servers
running VINES Version 4.10 and higher, the option runs on both
Intel 386TM and i486TM-based hardware server platforms.
